Google Business Profile Optimization: A Checklist for Small Businesses

By 11:11 Websites · Updated October 20, 2026

First check eligibility: a Google Business Profile generally requires in-person contact with customers during stated hours. Online-only businesses are not eligible. Follow the address and service-area rules that apply to your business; a virtual office is not a workaround.

Setting up a Google Business Profile gets you on the map. Optimizing it is what gets you chosen. Use this checklist to make sure your profile is working as hard as possible.

The basics (get these exactly right)

Services and products

Listing services helps Google understand what you do, and helps customers decide faster.

Your description

You get a short description field. Use it to say:

  1. What you do
  2. Who you serve and where
  3. What makes you different
  4. How to get started

Write it for people, not search engines. Don't include links or promotional gimmicks.

Photos

Profiles with good photos get more attention. Add:

Add a few new photos every month. Skip stock images.

Reviews

Don't offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and don't ask only happy customers through a filter. Both go against Google's rules.

Posts and updates

Posts show customers you're active.

Calls

Fast replies win jobs. Google's features change often, so if your profile shows a questions or messaging section, check it weekly and answer accurately.

Make your website match

Your profile and website should support each other:

Check your results

Your profile shows performance information such as how many people viewed it, called you, asked for directions or visited your website. Check it monthly to see what's working.

The 10-minute monthly routine

  1. Add 2–3 new photos.
  2. Publish one post.
  3. Reply to all new reviews.
  4. Check that your hours are still right.
  5. Look at your calls and website clicks for the month.

Ten minutes a month keeps your profile fresh and working for you.
